WINTER WITH TRAVEL EXPERTS IN THE
NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

Dear Canada friend,

In the Northwest Territories, winter can last up to 6 months – sometimes even longer. But that's for sure no reason for unhappiness! As winter in the NWT is ... cool – in the truest sense of the word! It's not just that temperatures can drop to a frosty -40°C. Plenty of of extraordinary adventures await open-minded visitors who want to explore the magical winter in Canada's North up close. These winter experiences can be realized with the help of our strong partners, such as Air Canada with its new flight to Yellowknife. Arctic Tours Canada is available in Yellowknife as a Receptive Tour Operator, while Aurora Village or Yellow Dog Lodge provide breathtaking experiences under the dance of the Northern Lights.

NORTHERN LIGHTS & MORE
AT AURORA VILLAGE

The Northwest Territories are the Aurora Capital of the World! Here, the conditions are simply ideal to enjoy the magical Aurora Borealis starting as of mid August.

A great place for seeing the Northern Lights is Aurora Village, a tipi village about 30 minutes outside of Yellowknife. Guests are given an all-inclusive package, including transfers from their accommodation in town. At Aurora Village, the waiting time until the Aurora shows up can be spent in different ways, depending on the season: Dog sledding tours are just as enjoyable as adventurous excursions on snowshoes. Appropriate equipment – including warm clothing – can be rented on site. And as soon as the magical lights start to dance in the sky, the actual Aurora Viewing Tours depart to the best viewing points. Or, you can simply take a seat on one of the cozily heated "Viewing Seats", directly in the Aurora Village.

YELLOW DOG LODGE:
AURORA VIEWING FROM THE HOT TUB

Also Yellow Dog Lodge offers the best opportunities for Aurora viewing. This comfortable fly-in wilderness lodge is just a 15-minute flight north-east of Yellowknife, in a fantastic location right on the shores of Graham Lake. Its owners, Kathy and Gord Gin, run the lodge in the warm and friendly manner that is so typical for the people of the north. Guests can choose from cosy rooms in the main lodge, private cabins with own fireplaces or - in summer - rustic glamping tents on a floating dock. A marvellous view of the lake goes without saying! Nature lovers get their money's worth at Yellow Dog Lodge all year round. Depending on the season, you can spend your time fishing, hiking, canoeing, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. In the evening, guests can relax in the lodge's sauna or in the open-air hot tub with an unobstructed view of the starry night sky and - from the end of the summer - the Aurora Borealis.
