Big adventures await in Manitoba

Dear Canada friend,

In Manitoba, a summer full of fabulous experiences is slowly coming to an end, leaving us with a few new product ideas for travel planning in 2025. Great wilderness adventures await in the North of the province, and they're now easy to book! In contrast, sightseeing by boat in Winnipeg is a more leisurely pleasure. And Manitoba's museums offer deep insights into Canada's Indigenous history.

From November 12 – 14, visitors to this year's Canada Showcase can get first-hand news from Manitoba in Paris. Together with our colleagues from Tourism Winnipeg, we are looking forward to many great conversations!

Its permanent collection includes 24,000 exhibits by Canadian, Indigenous Canadian and international artists, including the world's largest public collection of contemporary and traditional Inuit art. The more than 14,000 exhibits include 7,500 sculptures, 4,000 prints, 1,900 drawings and hundreds of other artifacts, ceramics and textiles. 5,000 of these alone are on display in a huge, two-storey visible vault. A place against forgetting:
National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada

Visitors who want to learn about Indigenous culture and history in Canada while travelling to Manitoba should pay a visit to the National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada. "Residential schools" was the name given to the up to 3,000 boarding school-like institutions across Canada in which, as a consequence of colonial policy, exclusively Indigenous students – i.e. First Nations, Inuit and Métis – were forcibly housed and educated from the second half of the 19th century until 1996.

The National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada is housed in the premises of the former Portage la Prairie Indian Residential School. This stands in Keeshkeemaquah on Long Plain First Nation land near the city of Portage La Prairie. For 60 years – from 1915 to 1975 – classes were taught here. In 2001 the desire arose on the part of the Long Plain First Nation to build a museum at the site. Finally, in 2020, the National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada was opened in collaboration with Parks Canada as a National Historic Site.

The museum is not only a place for historical reappraisal of the topic, but above all also serves as a social reappraisal of the trauma suffered. It is a place against forgetting. Through its exhibition of many images, artifacts and stories about a once government-fostered and church-run school system that was imposed on the Indigenous population, the museum plays an important role in educating people about the Residential Schools era. Visitors will gain a better understanding of the power and violence that shaped and forever changed generations of Indigenous people. At the same time, it memorializes the victims, helping many survivors on their path to healing.

With various exhibits and displays, the museum also pays a tribute to the history of the Indigenous people, their living culture, stories and languages. It is a place where the history and cultures of all peoples meet, fulfilling an important purpose in society.
