NORTHWEST TERRITORIES –
HOME OF THE WORLD'S BEST AURORA

Dear Canada friend,

The Northwest Territories is the world's Northern Lights mecca. Here, the Aurora dances up to 240 nights per year! Why are the Northern Lights so frequent in the NWT? Because Canada's subarctic is blessed with crystal-clear nights, ultra-low humidity, and a perfect location directly beneath the Earth's band of maximal Auroral activity – the Auroral oval.

In the Northwest Territories, the Northern Lights are the strongest in the world - the colours are brighter, the displays last longer, the movements are more elaborate – all of this creates a world of spectacular dances performed right above us almost every night. There are two Aurora seasons in the NWT: There's late summer and autumn, when the land and lakes are still warm, and there’s  winter, when the lakes are frozen over. Licensed NWT tour operators provide all manner of Northern Lights experiences – from rugged Aurora-hunting adventures to pampered stays at luxury lodges – giving you a front-row seat to the mysterious, magical and life-affirming cosmic dance.

With 2024/25 being the year of Solar Maximum with the highest level of solar activity in over 20 years, scientists expect phenomenal Aurora sightings in the next months. It’s just the right time to visit the Northwest Territories for their spectacular northern lights!

AURORA VILLAGE

A great place for seeing the Northern Lights is Aurora Village, a tipi village about
30 minutes outside of Yellowknife. Guests are given an all-inclusive package, including transfers from their accommodation in town. At Aurora Village, the waiting time until the Aurora shows up can be spent in different ways, depending on the season: Dog sledding tours are just as enjoyable as adventurous excursions on snowshoes. Appropriate equipment – including warm clothing – can be rented on site. And as soon as the magical lights start to dance in the sky, the actual Aurora Viewing Tours depart to the best viewing points. Or, you can simply take a seat on one of the cozily heated "Viewing Seats", directly in the Aurora Village.

BLACHFORD LAKE LODGE

Blachford Lake Lodge is an all-season luxury wilderness resort located in the rugged wilderness of the Northwest Territories, around 100 kilometres southeast of Yellowknife. It can be reached by bush-plane within 30 minutes from Yellowknife. Guests land on Blachford Lake, virtually right outside the front door – in the summer on floats, in winter on skis. Many miles from roads, or national suppliers of electricity and water, the lodge nonetheless provides many of the benefits of a luxury hotel, with the priceless addition of a pristine wilderness environment, unpolluted by artificial light or noise – the perfect setting for watching the Aurora Borealis.

The lodge's exclusive main building is uniquely situated on a rocky hill on the lake shore and offers a wonderful view of the scenic landscape and the Northern Lights. Visitors can stay overnight in the guest rooms of the main lodge. Blachford Lake Lodge also boasts private cabins on site as guest accommodations. All hand crafted and recently renovated, these cabins give guests a comfortable wilderness experience, with the amenities of the main lodge at their fingertips. The cabins have been undergoing renovations in the summer of 2024, and will be starting out the fall Aurora season fully updated and refurbished.

Further guest amenities include free wireless internet, a hot tub, a sauna and an Aurora-watch wake-up service. During the day, exciting outdoor adventures await, depending on the season of the visit. Activities range from hiking, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, swimming or wildlife viewing in the summer, to snowshoeing, fat tire biking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling or ice fishing in the winter – and many more!

Blachford Lake Lodge is owned and operated by Arctic Kingdom Expeditions, a pioneer in Arctic and Expedition touring in Canada’s North.
