YELLOWKNIFE CAPITAL WITH (HI)STORY
The North has a magical attraction and Yellowknife is the laid-back capital of the Northwest Territories. With its 19,000 residents from over 90 nations, it has plenty of exciting stories to tell - all year round! In its historic Old Town, you can still feel the gold rush spirit, not least due to the region’s abundance of diamond mines. The many houseboats and float planes add to the sense of adventure. We have some great suggestions for your 48 hours in Yellowknife.
The Northwest Territories is also the world's Northern Lights mecca. Here, the Aurora dance an average of 240 nights per year from late August to early April. The Northern Lights are so frequent in the NWT, as Canada's subarctic is blessed with crystal-clear nights, ultra-low humidity, and a perfect location directly beneath the Earth's band of maximal Auroral activity the "Auroral oval." It is not without reason that the Northwest Territories are called the "Aurora Capital of the World". Just outside of Yellowknife, there are some excellent Aurora viewing options, including the popular Aurora Village.
Yellowknife also has plenty to offer in the way of culinary delights! There is the historic Wildcat Café, the city's oldest restaurant dating back to the 1930s gold rush era, or popular The Woodyard, a cool brew pub in the Old Town with locally brewed beer from the NWT Brewing Company.
Did you know: For the first time, the Northwest Territories will celebrate a culinary festival this year! From 27 to 30 July 2023, regional food and culinary expertise including chefs, local producers, farmers and more from across the Territory will be showcased in Yellowknife. Further information at NWT Culinary Festival.

NEW INUVIALUIT RESTAURANT IN INUVIK:
MAMAQTUQ
Inuvik, NWT’s largest town north of the Arctic Circle and urban centre in the Western Arctic, has recently joined the ranks as a location for special culinary offers: the new Inuvialuit restaurant Mamaqtuq, owned and operated by the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, just opened in May 2023. Chef Brendan Vogt, himself Inuvialuit from the north of the NWT, wants to win over locals and international visitors alike with traditional Inuvialuit dishes. So far, delicacies as muskox stew or burgers from Banks Island have been featured as specials, but other traditional dishes will soon be added to the regular menu. The team is dedicated to supporting the local community and promoting sustainable food practices by working closely with local hunters, fishermen and gatherers to source their ingredients.
Mamaqtuq is more than just a restaurant - it is a cultural and educational destination striving to inspire a greater appreciation and understanding of Inuvialuit culture and the importance of preserving the traditions through authentic Inuvialuit culinary experiences, educational programming and storytelling. The eatery also got a traditional makeover before the opening: Inuvialuit drums and clothing decorate the restaurant, and there are ulus and delta braid designs accenting the walls.
Further information can be found with Mamaqtuq.
