Itinerary suggestion:
Saskatoon in 48 hours

Saskatoon shines! Saskatchewan's largest city has many names: "City of Bridges", "Paris of the Prairies" or "Toon Town", named after the virtual city of the Disney cartoon characters, which is well-known in North America. But no matter which name you choose, Saskatoon belongs at the top of every travel bucket list - no matter what time of year! In downtown alone, seven bridges span the South Saskatchewan River, which meanders picturesquely through the city. Its idyllic location, amazing culinary delights and world-class attractions are reason enough to pay a visit to the most beautiful city on the prairies!

We have plenty of inspiring ideas for Saskatoon in 48 hours, in and outside the city limits.

Han Wi Moon Dinner:
Culinary experience at Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Wanuskewin Heritage Park, just 5 km north of Saskatoon, has been a gathering place for Indigenous peoples of the Northern Plains for over 6,400 years. Every year in the summer, guests can experience a special evening at one of the park’s popular Han Wi Moon Dinners, a transformative culinary experience celebrating the Northern Plains and its people, landscape, ingredients and culture. In showcasing performing arts, visual arts and culinary arts all in one evening, this unique event engages all senses and connects to the spirit of the Opimihaw Valley.

Upon arrival, guests are welcomed to the park through a smudge ceremony, guided by host Honey Constant Inglis. Honey is a master level archaeologist from Sturgeon Lake First Nation and leads guests on a walking tour of the valley sharing stories of culture, heritage and the science of the land.

This welcome is followed by a four-course meal designed and executed by Métis chef Jenni Lessard and Cree chef Julie Bear. Many of the menu’s ingredients are harvested by the chefs from the valley or sourced from within 25 km of Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Guests are invited to indulge in the flavours and stories of their creations as they detail their deep connection to the land and the ingredients that grow within. The main course is served in the setting of Wanuskewin’s tipi village. Guests are then led to the edge of an ancient bison jump where they are offered dessert and muskeg tea, complete with panoramic views of the South Saskatchewan River and Opimihaw Valley.

After dinner, a cultural presentation by artist Curtis Peeteetuce, an award-winning theatre artist, painter and grass dancer of Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, will add to the experience.

Finally, Dr. Ernie Walker, archaeologist and co-founder of Wanuskewin Heritage Park, concludes the night by sharing his connection to the park. He tells his story of how “the loneliest ranch” on the outskirts of Saskatoon became placed on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage designation.

In 2024, the Han Wi Moon Dinners are offered every night from July 25 to 29. As space is limited, bookings need to be made online and well in advance.

Meewasin Valley Authority:
Walking tours & more along the
South Saskatchewan River

In and outside of Saskatoon, the South Saskatchewan River flows through the Meewasin Valley, inviting young and old to enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities – both on land and on water. Meewasin has over 100 km of recreational trails, including a 30 km section of the Trans Canada Trail, all offering great insights into the flora and fauna of the region.

Visitor programs by the Meewasin Valley Authority are focused on sustainability and authentic outdoor experiences that connect visitors to the story of Saskatchewan and transform participants into environmental stewards, with a bit of fun!

One of their programs is a 1.5 hours walking tour, offered twice per week in the summer months. It explores the past, present, and future of the Meewasin Valley, illustrating how the river and its banks have long been intertwined in the story of Saskatoon, and how Meewasin is working to preserve them for generations to come. Check-out the Meewasin app for an overview of what else is on offer, e.g. the Wildflower Walks, Birding Breakfasts or Grazing Dinners at Beaver Creek Conservation Area. Proceeds from Meewasin’s tours and experiences support their grassland conservation efforts, one of the most imperiled ecosystems on the planet.
