Cowboy life at its best:
La Reata Ranch

La Reata Ranch lies in idyllic location in Saskatchewan‘s southwest, about a two hour drive south of Saskatoon, in the Saskatchewan River valley, on the shores of Lake Diefenbaker. Rancher George Gaber has been operating this working cattle ranch for more than 20 years and provides an authentic cowboy way-of-life experience. Guests are accommodated in comfortable western style cabins that can sleep two or four people each. Each cabin has its own private bathroom. Hearty meals are served family-style and shared with guests and staff in the Cookshack. Lunch is often taken as a picnic during the rides.

No matter the guests‘ riding ability, La Reata has a horse for exploring the 5,000 acre ranch property. Daily trail rides are included in the stay and take guests through the open prairie landscape, over the rolling River Hills with their myriad canyons, and across the gently sloping sands of Lake Diefenbaker. Guests can get involved in the daily work, which includes checking the cattle or care for the horses. In all activities, the seasons and the rhythm of the cattle herd set the pace. Special moments are certainly the roundup in the fall, when the herd is driven from the pastures back to the ranch or the branding of the young calves in the spring.

Those who need a break from riding can relax by canoeing, fishing or swimming in the sparkling lake - after all, 14 kilometers of lakeshore belong to La Reata Ranch! In the evenings, guests and neighbors gather at La Reata Saloon for socializing over billiards or darts and many a cowboy story. With a minimum stay of two nights, guests are sure to get a feel for life on the ranch.

Direct booking or via Jonview or Journeys Across Canada.

Travel back in time:
Tunnels of Moose Jaw

In the small town of Moose Jaw, located along the Trans Canada Highway, visitors can travel back in time in the famous Tunnels of Moose Jaw. It is said that it was here where Al Capone engaged in excessive alcohol smuggling during the Prohibition era. Thanks to the excellent performance of the tour guides, the gangster feeling from the 1920s comes alive on the interactive tour Chicago Connection through the catacombs and corridors under the city streets. The tour The Passage to Fortune, on the other hand, tells the story of early Chinese immigrants to Canada. The Bunker 24 tour catapults visitors to the year 1958 during the Cold War era and tells of Canada's development after the Great Depression and World War II. All tours take about 50 minutes and can be booked online.

Training for Canada's Mounties:
RCMP Heritage Center

Canada's only basic training academy for the next generation of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers is located in Regina. More than 1,000 cadets are trained here each year. Visitors can take a guided tour of the training camp or delve into the history of the Mounties at the adjacent RCMP Heritage Centre. During the summer months, there is also the opportunity to attend the weekly Sunset Retreat Ceremony or attend the Sergeant Major's Parade, which takes place every weekday.
For further information, please visit RCMP Heritage Centre.

The RCMP Heritage Centre is bookable via Jonview, Journeys Accross Canada or Discover Holidays.

On May 23, 2023, it will be 150 years since the Canadian Parliament passed legislation establishing the North-West Mounted Police, which later became the RCMP. What began with a 300-member corps in the West has grown into an internationally recognized organization with more than 30,000 staff members, serving Canadians across the country and supporting international policing as well as peacekeeping activities.

As Canada and the province of Saskatchewan celebrate the RCMP's 150th anniversary next year, Canadians and visitors alike can look forward to many special celebrations, including the legendary RCMP Musical Ride. For more info, visit The 150th anniversary of the RCMP.

On Indigenous tracks:
Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Just outside Saskatoon, on historic Dakota land in the Opimihaw Valley, lies the Indigenous site of Wanuskewin - a National Historic Site and a true cultural and historical highlight. Indigenous peoples of the Northern Plains have gathered at this site for more than 6,400 years. In recent decades, many archaeological finds have been uncovered at this place, demonstrating that people once gathered here for trading, hunting and traditional ceremonies. Today, visitors are taken on a journey back in time here. Dance performances, Indigenous art exhibits, hands-on workshops, storytelling and tipi camps provide an up-close look at the region's Indigenous culture. The Wanuskewin restaurant is one of the best Indigenous restaurants in all of Canada, serving modern dining experiences anchored in the traditional components of Indigenous cuisine.

It was just in 2021, when Wanuskewin Heritage Park completed an approximately $40 million all-around renovation of the entire facility, which included the reintroduction of a small herd of prairie bison. It took the return of the bison to reveal another archaeological sensation: By wallowing in the dust, the animals uncovered four boulders with petroglyphs about 1,000 years old, including the prehistoric tool which once was used to carve them into the stone. The discovery of these petroglyphs underpins Wanuskewin's ongoing application to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
